Below-grade spaces on Long Island flood differently than a living room does — from groundwater and hydrostatic pressure as often as a plumbing failure. We treat the cause, not just the puddle.
Long Island's aquifer sits close to the surface across much of Nassau and Suffolk, so a basement or crawl space can take on water through the foundation and slab even without a storm event, especially after heavy or sustained rain. That means drying alone doesn't solve the problem — without a drainage or vapor-barrier fix, the same space floods again.
Usually not under a standard policy — recurring seepage and groundwater intrusion are typically treated as a maintenance issue, not a sudden covered loss. A sump pump or water-backup endorsement can add coverage for some of these events; ask your agent whether your policy has one.
Depends on the source. A one-time storm event with no groundwater issue may only need extraction and drying. A recurring moisture problem usually needs a vapor barrier or drainage correction, or the mold and rot come back.
